Lecture 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is cytoarchitectonics
A
Segmentation of the brain based on its microscopic appearance.
2
Q
Outline the process of TMS
A
- Stimulator containing coil of wire placed above scalp
- Brief pulse of electrical current fed through coil resulting in generation of magnetic field
- Magnetic field induces electrical field leading to neuronal excitation.
3
Q
What are some of the advantages of TMS
A
- Temporal resolution in ms range
- Virtual lesion in subject may be better defined than lesion in patient
- Short duration reduces risk of plasticity
- Repeated studies in same subject
4
Q
What are some of the drawbacks of TMS
A
- Only cortical areas accessible
- Spatial undersampling
- Auditory cortex stimulation issues (muscles)
5
Q
What are event-related oscillations?
A
Stimulus or task related changes in EEG oscillations, in terms of frequency or amplitude.
6
Q
What are Event-related potentials?
A
Waveforms defined in terms of latency relative to an event such as a sensory stimulus.
