lecture 1 Flashcards
teaching and learning process, learning theories
________ education is the process of helping clients learn health related behaviours; ________ education helps nurses acquire knowledge, attitudes, and skills to help improve delivery of care
patient; staff
what is learning?
observable, measurable changes in behaviour as a result of exposure to stimuli
what is teaching?
intervention involving sharing information and experiences to meet intended learner outcomes
what is the ASSURE model? what does it stand for?
- it is used to carry out the education process
- analyze, state, select, use, require, evaluate
what are the 8 benefits of patient education
- increase consumer satisfaction
- improve quality of life
- ensure continuity of care
- decrease patient anxiety
- reduce complications of illness and incidence of disease
- promote adherence to treatment plans
- maximize independence in ADLs
- encourage consumers to be actively involved in planning of their care
what are the 8 barriers to teaching?
- lack of time
- low priority status of client education
- lack of confidence and competence
- questionable effectiveness of client education
- documentation difficulties
- absence of third party reimbursement
- negative influence of environment
- lack of motivation and skill
what are the 10 obstacles to learning?
- literacy problems
- lack of time
- low priority status of client education
- lack of confidence and competence
- complexity, fragmentation, inconvenience of health care system
- denial of learning needs
- lack of support
- extent of needed behaviour change
- negative influence of environment
- cultural differences
what 4 concepts are included in the the behaviourist learning theory?
- stimulus conditions
- reinforcement
- response
- drive
what do behaviourists believe?
manipulation of environment or stimulus can modify responses
what is respondant conditioning used for?
it is used to acquire new responses as well as extinguish learned responses
what is systematic desensitization?
reintroduction of stimulus until fear and anxiety no longer develop
what is operant conditioning?
a type of learning where behavior is controlled by consequences
what are the 4 types of reinforcement?
- positive: rewarded responses are likely to be repeated
- negative: responses that allows escape from painful/undesireable situation are likely to be repeated
- extinction/non-reinforcement: responses not reinforces are not likely to be repeated
- punishment: responses that bring painful/undesirable consequences will be suppressed
what is the cognitive learning theory?
- occurs inside the learner
- developmental stage, changing mental activities
what are the 4 stages of information processing?
- attention to stimuli
- processing stimuli
- memory (short to long term)
- action based on storage and how it was processed
