Lecture 1 Flashcards

1
Q

DIN

A

Drug identification number, assigned by Health Canada to every drug product that has been on the market, located on label of prescription medication and over the counter drugs. Tells all pertinent information about a drug by looking up the DIN.

Q

Generic drug name

A

Given to established drug and usually similar to chemical name. Follows conventions for drug type, I.e. suffixes. Before generic name companies can call drug by letters and numbers

Q

Irrational approach

A

Empirical oberservations of effects of drugs from screening many chemical compounds, active component is isolated, it’s chemical structure is determined and modifications can be made.

Q

patent definition

A

Right grnted by the government for any device, substance or method that is new, innovative and useful. Patents are valid for 20 yrs where the owner has all rights over the commercial returns

Q

choosing drug target

A

drug target is structure involved in a disese pathway, ideally is disease specific, in modern times we understand the basic biology of disease before creating the drug, historically drugs were discovered before the target was known
