Lecture 1 Flashcards
Define Physiology
The function of an organ system and its parts
Define Immunology
The study of the structure and function of the body’s defense system against disease
Name the four major tissue types
Epithelial, Muscular, Connective, Nervous
What is epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue consists of cells arranged continuously in sheets
What are the functions of epithelial tissue (3)
Serves as a selective barrier, Serves as a secretory surface, Serves as a protective surface against abrasions
What is connective tissue
Composed of specialised cells, extracellular protein fibres, and ground substance (Matrix)
What are the functions of connective tissue (6)
Structural framework for the body,
Transport fluids and dissolved materials,
Protection for organs,
Support surround and interconnect other tissues,
Store energy,
Defend the body
What are the types of connective tissue
Connective tissue proper (Loose and Dense)
Fluid connective tissue (Blood and Lymph)
Supporting connective tissue (Cartilage and Bone)
What is muscle tissue
Makes up 50% of the tissue in the body, function is contraction to make movement
Name the different types of muscle tissue (3)
Skeletal muscle tissue
Cardiac muscle tissue
Smooth muscle tissue
What is the big difference between skeletal muscle tissue and cardiac/smooth muscle tissue
Skeletal muscle movement is voluntarily controlled whereas cardiac/smooth muscle tissue is controlled involuntarily
What is nervous tissue
Nervous tissue is specialised to conduct electrical communication through impulses from one region of the body to another
What does nervous tissue consist of
Neuroglia and Glia
What are the functions of neuroglia (5)
Maintain physical structure of nervous tissue
Repair nervous tissue framework after injury
Perform phagocytosis
Provide nutrients to neurons
Regulate the composition of the interstitial fluid surrounding neurons
Function of dendrites
recieving information, typically from other neurons
