Lecture 1 Flashcards
Occam’s Razor
The simplest explanation that is consistent with all the facts is most likely to be correct
Hypothesis
Statement consistent with most of the data, must be testable, not a question
Theory
A hypothesis that has been extensively tested by many investigators using different approaches
Law
A theory that has been proven with outcomes that are predictable and can be calculated
Cytology
Focuses on optical techniques and seeks to understand what cells look like
Biochemistry
Focuses on the composition, enzymatic properties, and chemical properties of cells
Genetics
Focuses on heredity and the flow of information within species
Cell Theory
- All cells are composed of one or more cells
- Cells are the fundamental unit of life
- All cells arrive from pre-existing cells
Spontaneous Generation
The idea that life arose spontaneously from inanimate material
Vitalism
The hypothesis that living things are alive because of some vital force
In Vitro
Using purified chemicals, bio molecules or cellular components
In Vivo
Using living cells or organisms
In Silico
Using computational approaches or computer models
