Lecture 04 - Agent-based models Flashcards
Agent-based models
Are cellular automata a type of agent-based model?
Yes.
Agent-based models
Are dynamical networks a type of agent-based model?
Yes
Agent-based models
What is an agent-based model?
A computational simulation with multiple discrete agents.
Agent-based models
What are the properties of agents?
(BIEPLAS)
- May produce non-trivial “collective behaviour” as a whole
- Local interaction with other agents through pre-defined rules
- Perceive the environment
- Internal properties
- Spatially localized
- May learn autonomously
- No central supervisor
Agent-based models
What kind of model do you get where the assumptions are derived from empirically observed phenomena?
A model using micro-knowns to produce macro-unknowns.
Agent-based models
Where do the assumptions come from in a model that uses micro-knowns to produce macro-unknowns?
Empirically observed phenomena
Agent-based models
What kind of model do you get that uses hypothetical model assumptions?
A model using micro-unknowns to reproduce macro-knowns.
Agent-based models
Where do the assumptions come from in a model that uses micro-unknowns to produce macro-knowns?
Hypothetical model assumptions.
Agent-based models
What would you use a model that uses micro-knows to reproduce macro-unknowns for?
Prediction.
Agent-based models
Which type of model is better suited for predictions?
A model derived from empirically observed phenomena (micro-known to produce macro-unknown)..
Agent-based models
Which type of model is to better suited to explore and develop new explanations
A model derived from hypothetical model assumptions (micro-unknown to produce macro-known).
Agent-based models
How does Schelling’s segregation model work?
During updates, agents look in their neighbourhood and jump to a new position if the fraction of similar agents is too low.
Agent-based models
Describe the “garbage collection by ants” model.
Ants move around in a space with garbage. When it hits garbage, then 1) If it holds nothing, it picks up garbage. 2) If it holds garbage, it drops it.
Describe the predator-prey model
- Population of rabbits and foxes
- Surviving rabbits will reproduce
- Foxes are faster than rabbits
- Foxes eat rabbits to survive
- Surviving foxes reproduce
