Lecture 03 Flashcards
homeostasis
maintaining of an optimal internal environment (temperature, water level, heart rate, breathing)
neurons
cells that receive and transmit information; compose the nervous system; number determines the complexity of an organism
afferent neurons
moves toward a central source
efferent neurons
moves away from a central source
interneurons
signal from one neuron to another
the central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
meninges
3 layers of connective tissue that surround and protect the brain
cerebrum
most prominent region of the brain
corpus callosum
a bundle of nerves that connect 2 hemispheres, allowing them to talk to each other
limbic system
the “emotional brain” ; found buried within the cerebrum; old structure; contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala, and hippocampus
amygdala
produces sensations of pleasure, fear, or sexual arousal; damage leads to the inability to feel fear or recognize facial expressions
