Lecture 03/08/2022 Flashcards
What is steel?
Iron-carbon system
What are ferrous alloys?
Iron based, classification based on carbon content
In a solid solution, where does carbon sit in a binary system?
Interstitial sites
What does it mean that iron shows allotropy/polymorphism?
Exists at different lattice structures based on temperature
Describe FCC steel.
- Austenite
- High packing density
- Fewer, larger voids
- Dissolves more carbon
Describe BCC steel
- Ferrite
- Lower packing density
- Lattice voids are smaller
- Dissolves less carbon
Pure iron is also known as?
Soft iron
Iron-carbon system is also referred to as?
Iron carbide
Describe the properties of pearlite
- Alternating layers of ferrite (alpha) and cementite (Fe3C)
- 8:1 ratio
- Colonies with layers in specific orientations
- Mechanical properties in between ferrite and cementite
Why do layers occur with the formation of pearlite?
Carbon atoms need to diffuse minimal distances
Eutectoid steels form?
Pearlite microstructure composed of ferrite and cementite
Hypoeutectoid steels form?
Proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite
Hypereutectoid steels form?
Proeutectoid cementite and pearlite
The addition of other elements cause what change with the eutectoid?
Change in position with respect to temp and carbon concentration
What are the benefits of alloying elements?
- Improve corrosion resistance
- Make more amenable to heat treatment
