Lecture 01 Flashcards
What is epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of distribution and determinants of health related states or events in populations and the application of this study to control health problems
What is the difference between absolute and relative numbers in in epidemiology
Absolute values are independent values which give the total count while relative numbers depend on other values And are useful for comparisons.
Define incidence and prevalence in epidemiology
Incidence measures the rate of new disease cases in a given time period, while prevalence measures the total number of existing cases at a particular time.
What does the term demography refer to
It describes the size and characteristics of a population, often considering age and sex, and explores changes in population size, structure, and distribution over time.
What are the determinants of disease occurrence
Factors that influence the occurrence of a disease, including biological, behavioural, societal, and structural factors
What are the different levels of prevention for burns
This include primordial(improving living conditions)
Primary(health promotion in at risk individuals)
Secondary(early diagnosis and prompt treatment)
Tertiary (preventing complications and providing treatment)
What is the goal of evidence based medicine in burn treatment
It aims to use the best available evidence to guide burn treatment decisions, ensuring effective and practical interventions
How does warm water treatment work for burns
It allows microcirculatory perfusion, preventing cell death and burn progression, making it a practical approach for burn management.
