What is a pharmacist?
One who is licensed to prepare and dispense drugs and compounds and is knowledgeable concerning their properties
What is pharmacy?
The health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences. It is charged with ensuring safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs
A place where medicinal drugs are prepared or sold
What is the role of pharmacists?
They are health professionals who practice the science of pharmacy
Traditionally they take a request for medicine from a prescribing health care provider in the form of a medication prescription. They evaluate the appropriateness of the prescription, dispense the medication to the patient and counsel them on the proper use and adverse effects of that medication
Of the current roles of pharmacists in NZ, which role encompasses the largest proportion of pharmacists? Which role encompasses the smallest proportion?
Community pharmacy- 75%
Pharmaceutical industry- 1%
What are the emerging roles for pharmacists?
- Medication review/management
- Screening/referral/health promotion
- OTC prescribing
- Speciality practice e.g. Oncology, elderly care, psychiatry, compounding
- Prescribing advisors
- Drug utilisation evaluation and policy development
What is the advanced scope of practice legislation that will hopefully be in place by the time we are qualified?
The pharmacist prescriber legislation.
This was applied by the pharmacy council in 2010 for designated prescriber rights for pharmacists
