Define integrated advertising and provide an example?
Integrated advertising is other products being advertised within an advertisement or within a source of media
eg. Advertisements on youtube before a video, or advertisements on google
What is one of the main concerns with advertising?
People don’t think about the processes involved in advertising and don’t realize the power that advertisers have
What is the main points covered in the reading “Advertising’s new surveillance ecosystem” by Joseph Turow and Nora Draper?
Some main points covered is the shift of advertising from its traditional way to the online way through google and use of cookies and other forms of dataveillance to create personalized ads for each individual. it also touches upon the concerns regarding the collection of data
what is native advertising?
Native Advertising is when an advertisement is set up to look like a legitimate news source or an article that is set up to capture peoples attention and therefore trick them into clicking it and reading about it
How do advertisers collect digital information about their consumers? What is this process called?
they use data mining and analysis to collect digital information about their consumers, this is made possible by the creation of Cookies and other dataveillance technologies
What is a loyalty program and how does it influence consumers?
Loyalty programs are given out to consumers who often visit or shop at a place often and its often in the form of a discount card or a loyalty card that makes sure you continue shopping from that place. They effect consumers because in order to save money or get good deals and discounts, they must use up the loyalty cards thus making thrm spend more money
What is a Glass Consumer?
Glass consumers are referred to as consumers being very easy to persuade and track our buying habits (being see through)
Briefly describe the roles of facebook and google on advertisement companies?
companies like google and facebook measure the behaviour onkine of their users in terms of what they’re buying or looking for and compile it together to form a data double. This tells the advertisers exactly what each individual would want to purchase in terms of the interests of their data doubles
what are some pros and cons on targeted advertising?
Pros: it enables targeted advertising so we see what we are somewhat interested in and somewhat applies to what we want
cons:
- advertisers can have access to what we see, hear, and read
- people can be filtered down a path of hyperideology and our mentalities can be structured by these advertising
As answered before, what is a main concern of targeted advertising in detail?
A main concern is narrowing the ideologies of people by making them only rely on news or information based on one source rather than getting exposure to multiple sources
What is the difference between Society Making Media and Segment Making Media?
Society Making Media is gathering different subgroups together and comparing and contrasting different opinions within the subgroups
Segment Making Media: is creating subgroups and having these subgroups only share opinions with one another and hold on to specific ideologies
What is the issue with targeted advertising and Segment Making Media?
- The issue is that with Segment Making Media, the ideologies are limited down one filtered path making it very narrow thinking.
- Targeted advertising could work as a Segment Making Media because it keeps you in limited space and we lose control over what we having access too thus creating a society that facilitates the status quo
