Lec5 Flashcards
Continuous casting casting process
molten steel ladle tundish mould secondary cooling roll layout flame cut off
What does a tundish do
Promotte inclusion flotation by maximising residence time
prevent thermal and chemical losses from the melt
Purpose of the mould
primary source for heat extration and allows a solid shell to grow and support the liquid core
scale of continuous casting process
huge factories can be 1 km long
Mould fluxes
control lubrication (improve surface quality) and heat transfer (minimise defect formation)
Mould powders
Mould powders inexpensive, but are asked to perform a number of operations that are vital to producing good quality steel castings
What is vital to control and why
Control of heat transfer and lubrication is vital in minimising defect formation
advantages of continuous casting
when combined with other processes can produce parts rapidly from liquid steel to coiled sheet in 7 minutes
