LEC01 Flashcards
Cells, Membranes, Molecules
1
Q
What are lipids?
A
Fatty compounds that control what comes and goes from the cell.
2
Q
Triacylglycerol or Triglycerides (non-polar and neutral)
A
- A type of fat that stores energy in the fat cells of the body.
- They cannot dissolve in aqueous cytosol as they are neutral.
- Synthesised in the endoplasmic reticulum and accumulate in the hydrophobic core or the ER bilayer.
3
Q
Phospholipids
A
- Hydrophilic
- Water loving, contacts the aqueous environment. - Hydrophobic
- Water hating, middle of the membrane
4
Q
Functions of the Cell Membrane (List Them)
A
- Encloses and protects the cell’s contents
- Links to structures that provide cell structure or movement
- Transports of solutes in and out of the cell.
5
Q
Passive Transport
A
- No energy required
- Solute moves through designated protein channel
- High to low
6
Q
Active Transport
A
- Energy required (ATP)
- For larger molecules
- Goes low to high, therefore against the gradient
7
Q
Diffusion
A
Hydrophobic molecules and very small un-charged polar molecules can diffuse through the bilayer.
8
Q
Facilitated Diffusion
A
Molecules pass through with the help of select proteins (channel - left or carrier - right).
9
Q
Endocytosis
A
10
Q
Exocytosis
A
