Inside the body
In-vivo
Outside the body
In-vitro
Method that uses a lancet to make a small incision into the capillary bed of the skin
Capillary puncture or skin puncture
Method that uses a lancet to make a small incision into the capillary bed of the skin
Capillary puncture or skin puncture
Stevie’s sharp instrument. Designed for making cuts on the fingers and heels
Lancet or incision device
Creates a small hole by vaporizing water in the skin
Laser lancet
Small plastic tube used to hold blood specimen. Comes with a narrow capillary tube
Microcollection container
Microcollection container is also called?
Microtube
Narrow bore tubes made of plastic or glass used usually for hematocrit determinations with one end sealed with clay or plastic
Microhematocrit tubes and sealants
Microhematocrit can tubes hold?
50 to 75 ul
Used for blood films for hematology determinations
Microscope slides
Increases blood flow by seven-fold by warmth
Warming device
Special equipment used for collecting capillary blood gas (CBG)
Capillary blood gas (CBG) equipment
CBG equipment contains:
Collection tubes, stirrers, magnets and plastic caps
High in oxygen thus bright red
Arterial blood
Low in oxygen the dark in color
Venous blood
Capillary blood is a mixture of?
Arterial blood, venous blood, capillary blood, interstitial fluid, and intracellular blood
Arterial blood is found in the?
Pulmonary vein, left chamber, arteries
Travels from the peripheral veins passing through the venous system then the right chamber of the heart
Venous blood
Preferred specimen for infants, young children, elderly, and patients with severe burns
Capillary blood
Capillary blood is extracted via?
Venues and arterioles found in the capillary bed
Fills the space around the cells filtered from the blood capillaries and is drained by the lymph
Interstitial fluid
Fluid found inside the cells
Intracellular fluid
Facilitates the movement of fluid in the membrane and blocks the entrance of unwanted materials
Intracellular fluid
POCT
Point of care testing
Good alternative for venipuncture
Capillary specimen
Use capillary specimen when!
Vein ave fragile and not accessible due to scars and burns, veins ave reserved for other procedures, clotting tendencies, extreme fear of needles, veins Will be used for glucose monitoring on oval glucose tolerance test
Preferred method for infants
Capillary puncture
Reasons my capillary puncture is preferred for infants
Health risks, requires only small volume of blood, venipuncture can damage veins and tissues, can lead to hemorrhage, thrombosis, gangrene, and infection, risk of injury, capillary blood is preferred
Sequence with which blood must be drawn and collected
Order of draw
Why do we need to wipe the first drop of blood
Tissue fluid can dilute the blood
Does red microsample contain anticoagulants?
Yes
Does blue microsample contain anticoagulants?
No
Blood test to check abnormalities in blood cell
Routine blood film / smear
Used to determine if patient has malaria
Thick blood smear
Puncture recommended for infants
Capillary blood gas specimen by heel puncture
Used to help determine any liver disorder in infants
Neonatal bilirubin collection
