Nasopharyngeal benign lesions:
-occurs in CF and aspirin intolerant asthma
can be 1)ethmoidal
2)antrochoanal- maxillary sinuses
signs and symptoms:
fever, headache, nose congestion, sinusitis, loss of smell, sleep apnea
associated with EBV
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Biopsy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma:
-pleomorphic keratin positive epithelial cells
-poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma
excessive irritation or use of vocal cords lead to:
Vocal cord nodule
bilateral
Vocal cord nodule patients present with
hoarsness; resolves with resting voice or stopping smoking
Laryngeal papilloma occurs due to:
HPV 6 and 11
Laryngeal papilloma clinically
-singular in adults and multiple in children
-presents with hoarsness
Laryngeal carcinoma arises as:
-squamous cell carcinoma arising from epithelial lining of vocal cord
Risk factors of: laryngeal carcinoma
Can rarely arise from laryngeal papilloma
risk factors: tobacco, alcohol
laryngeal carcinoma presents with:
cough, stridor, hoarsness
middle age M>F
laryngeal carcinoma: if is carcinoma in situ or carcinoma
Carcinoma in situ: invasive squamous cell carcinoma
carcinoma: lymph nodes and neck
most common area the L-CA tumor can develop is on:
directly on vocal cords, glottic tumors 60-75%
has the best prognosis
how do squamous cell carcinomas of the larynx begin and end:
they begin as in situ lesions, that later appear pearly grey, ulcerating and funganating on mucosal surface
General clinical manifestations of lung tumors include:
Cough
weight loss
hemoptysis
loss of appetite
SVC compression
