What are our movement types in 18th, 19th and 20th centuries?
18th century: movement around region through colonial rather than indigenous networks.
19th century: Voluntary movements through missionaries and Forced movements through black birding.
20th century: Push/pull factors include - Economic, Religion and Family obligations.
What is DIASPORA?
The dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.
How do we interpret PACIFIC DIASPORA?
- Communities who live somewhere other than their original home.
- Do not plan to return
- Those whose sense of who they are is connected to that place.
- Connections to both places including the place where they live.
Who are the examples of Pacific Diaspora viewed in class?
Pia Mia and J Boog using their music to show their connection to their homeland - shown in use of lyrics, clothing and jewellery, use of cultural imagery.
What are the 3 focus elements of Pacific Diasporas?
- Connections with indigenous peoples in the new home.
- Specific experiences of pacific peoples in NZ
- Pacific conceptualizations and experience of migration globally
How do we maintain connections with the home island/with each other/with culture in the new place?
- church
- sports
- dance and performance
- fundraising
- family events (funerals)
- culture practices
