the OTARA shirt photo that was used by Te Papa museum to show pride of place, but when they found out the person in the photo wearing the shirt was Maori, they replaced the person with a Pacific person to show that it “represents the pacific”

Is Maori part of the Pacific? Yes, No, Depends and explain why.

A

Yes.

  1. Geographically grouped on the maps as part of the “polynesian triangle”.
  2. The ancestors of the Maori’s came through the same routes as their oceania brothers and sisters.
  3. They have similar legends and have the same waka traditions as those in the Pacific e.g., Takitimu waka last port of call was in Cook Islands before landing in NZ.
  4. Language is very similar to Cook Island Maori.

The name means “the place of Tara” who was the Maori chief of the area. The full name is Te Puke o Tara (the hill of Tara)
