How did Moscow grow in importance even though its rulers had never held vladimir?
They sucked up to the mongols, paying tribute and gaining their approval.
Why was Yuri Danilovicchi of Moscow given vladimir? Who was legitimately supposed to receive it?
The mongols give Yuri Vladimir as a favor (he is married to khan uzbek’s daughter). Mikhail of Tver was supposed to get it according to Rurikid tradition.
What did the Daniilovichi’s legitimacy depend on? What did they have to do to make sure they kept it?
The mongols’ approval. They had to subdue other territories in order to get more resources, in particular novgorod.

When did the battle of Kulikovo field take place? Who was fighting? What was the result?
- Dimitrii Donskoi defeated khan mamai. Mamai was also defeated by toktamysh. Mongol’s authority greatly reduced.
What is the new dynastic tradition recognized by Ivan III? What led to this?
Throne is passed from father to son. Ivan III’s father, Dimitrii Donskoi’s grandson Vasili II decides to give the throne to his son. He defeats his uncle Iurii and the new tradition of promogeniture is instilled.
What happens at the battle of Ugra? When does it happen? What was the state of the golden horde before this?
Ivan III refuses to pay patent to khan ugra in 1480. He then defeats him at ugra. The Golden Horde collapses soon after.
The golden horde had been fragmented: khanates of Crimea, Kazan, and Aztragan broke off. Remaining territory was called the great horde.
Who had been the baskaki and mongols’ personnal servitors?
the tatars.
