lec 4- reverb and echo Flashcards

1
Q

what is reverberation?

A

-it is when sound is either reflected so many times that no single, discontinuous repeat of the source is percieved or when the reflective surfaces are too near the listener to allow subjective aural seperation

-prolongation of sound, resonance

Q

what is echo?

A

occurs when sound source is distinctly reproduced, may be single or multiple depending on how sound bounces

Q

how does sound behave?

A

-it bounces off of walls
-in a curved room, it comes back to one spot

Q

what is the rotunda effect?

A

when sound bounces off of the wall in a way where you can hear a whisper from one side to the other

8
Q

what are the 3 things that happen when a sound hits a surface?

A

-reflection: most of the sound is reflected, almost as loud as original
-absorption: absorbing power is determined by material used
-diffusion: scatters sound depending on desired effect

Q

what is sound diffraction?

A

when the sound gets split/scattered due to obstacles

Q

which sound wavelength is more directional?

A

-high wavelength, because less diffraction
-low has high diffraction

Q

what is chamber reverb?

A

putting sound into a space (e.g. sound out of a speaker into a cave to get reverb)

Q

what is damping?

A

-the response of the early reflections and decay of the tail

16
Q

what is dry/wet signal level?

A

-determines the amount of original sound in the reverb

17
Q

what is early reflection level?

A

-echo effect

18
Q

what is tail level?

A

-a volume control that determines the amount of the hall effect of the reverb

19
Q

what reverb sounds the best?

A

convolution reverb, only possible with technology
