lec 4 Flashcards
what is an estimation in a population?
an estimation puts bounds into perameter values
what does hypothesis ask about sample data?
if the perameter values differ from a certain expectation.
what is hypothesis testing?
compares data to the specific expectations of a null hypothesis.
what is the null hypothesis?
a specific statement made about the value of a perimeter made for the purpous of an argument.
what is an alternative hypothesis?
includes all other feasible values for the population parameter, besides the value stated in the null hypothesis.
is the null hypothesis considered an alternative hypothesis?
no
what is a two tailed hypthesis?
these include values on both sides of the perimeter value stated in the null hypothesis.
what do we say when the null hypothesis is proven?
we fail to reject the null hypothesis
what do we say when the null is disproven?
we reject the null hypothesis
what is the null distribution?
a sampling distribution of outcomes assuming the null is true
the probability of obtaining data or data that is an even worse match (assuming the null) is called what?
a P value
what is the typical number for a P-value
0.05
what is the significance of a 0.06 p-value?
it is on the edge of being significant
go to lecture 4, slide 13 and re-look at the concept
noice!
what is a Type 1 error?
when the null is both true and rejected
