Lec 4 Flashcards
what type of information can Acute studies provide for pesticides?
Safe handling
Doses for long-term studies
MSDS sheets
product labeling
how toxic is it
What can short-term (sub-chronic) provide information on?
tissue and organs most susceptible
tolerated doses
suitable doses for long-term studies
how does it cause toxicity
what can long-term (chronic) studies provide information on?
systemic toxicity and carcinogenicity
what is a safe level (NOAEL)
what is the goal of environmental fate studies?
determine behavior in soil, water and air, and the potential uptake / bioaccumulation
what 4 types of data are needed to establish the environmental fate of a pesticide? What does each type of data consist of?
- physical and chemical properties - water solubility, vapor pressure, Kow
- transformation process - the pathways of transformation or degradation (chemical, biological, sunlight, aerobic or anaerobic)
- mobility - how does the pesticide move from applied areas
- field study results - relevant studies to Canadian environment.
