Lec 12 Flashcards
Sensory systems
Brings stimulus info to the brain
Sometimes brings external stimulus into the brain
Sometimes the stimuli conveys info about internal states
Sensory receptors
Specialized cells for detection particular stimuli
Sensory neuron
A sensory receptor in the form of a neuron with a modified ending
More often the receptor is an epithelial cell that synapses on an afferent neuron
Mechanoreceptors
Mechanical energy
Chemoreceptors
Chemical receptors
Photoreceptors
Electromagnetic energy
Two types of somatosensation
Cutaneous sensations
Proprioception and kinesthesis
Cutaneous sensations
Tactile perception- Mechanical stimulation of skin
Temperature
Pain
Proprioception and kinesthesis
Sense of limb position and movement
Thermoreceptors-warm fibres
Increase firing rate in response to warm, decrease to cold
Thermoreceptors-cold fibres
Increase firing rate in response to cold, decrease to warm
Nociceptors (Pain)
Respond to intense pressure, temperature, and potentially damaging chemicals
Polymodal (mostly) or unimodal
Somatotopic mapping-homunculus
Representation of important areas, magnified hands and lips
Insect touch mechanoreceptor
Bristles all over the exoskeleton known as sensillum are present
When the bristles move, the dendrites bend, opening stretch activated cation channels
