LEC 1: Life And Cells Flashcards
What makes something alive?
Order, structure, evolution and adaptation, responsiveness, the ability to regulate bodily functions, able to grow and develop, and the ability to reproduce
What is an organ?
A part of the body made of multiple tissues to complete a specific bodily function
What are tissues?
Groups of cells that work together, performing specialised functions
What are cells?
Fundamental units of structure and functions
What are organelles?
Various functional components of cells
What are molecules?
Chemical structures that consist of 2 or more atoms
What is transcription?
When genetic information is moved from DNA to RNA (ribosomes)
What is translation?
When the transcribed genetic information is turned into proteins
What can undergo reverse transcription?
Retro viruses
What is ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate
Describe the process of energy in cells
ATP hydrolysis = ADP + P + energy for cellular work
ADP + P + catabolic energy = ATP + H2O
