Why is obesity a problem?
two reasons
1) Health Consequences
a)obesity is a major risk factor for chronic disease
ex: type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension, various cancers, osteoarthritis
b)also other co-morbidities
ex: respiratory difficulties, chronic muscoloskeletal problems, depression, infertility, severe covid-19 illness
2) Economic perspective
-total economic cost of an overweight and obese population in Canada is approx 30 million
-Direct costs of excess medical care (manage and treat obesity as well as the other health factors ^things from above)
-Indirect costs with loss of productivity caused by disability and mortality
What are the indirect and direct costs of obesity
Direct costs: excess medical care to the individuals with obesity. Done to try and treat the obesity and the other health conditions
Indirect costs: due to loss of productivity due to disability and mortality
What percentage of deaths are attributable to obesity in Canada
approx 5%
What is currently the 7th leading cause of mortality within the canadian population
Diabetes
By 2030 what does the WHO estimate
438 million people worldwide will have diabetes
Currently how many canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes
3.8 million. (16%)
(approx 90% estimated to have type 2)
What is the definition of diabetes mellitus
A metabolic disorder characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia (HIGH BLOOD GLUCOSE)
Due to»>
-defective insulin secretion
