Learning Theory Flashcards
Classical Conditioning
Learning a new behaviour via the process of association, linking two stimuli together to produce a learned response.
Before Conditioning
UCS produces an UCR. NS is also present, but doesn’t yet produce a response.
During Conditioning
NS is paired with the UCS. The UCR still occurs in response to thr UCS.
After Conditioning
The NS is now the CS as it has been associated with the UCS to create a CR - the same response as before, but has now been learned.
Who suggested the idea that attachment takes place with classical conditioning?
Dollard and Miller, called the ‘cupboard love’ approach.
What is the UCS with attachment?
Food
What is the UCR with attachment?
The baby being happy/fulfilled.
What is the NS with attachment?
The mother, or other attachment figure.
What will happen when conditioning has taken place in attachment?
The baby will feel happy/fulfilled by the prescense of its mother.
What concept is learning theory drawn around?
Drive Reduction
How is food helpful for babies to attach?
Hunger is a biological, innate motivator, and our primary drive.
What’s our secondary drive?
Attachment, as we associate the primary drive of hunger to our caregivers.
Who developed the theory of operant conditioning?
B.F Skinner (1938).
Operant Conditioning
Changing the behaviour by the use of reinforcement given after the response - learning through consequences.
How can operant conditioning be applied to mother-infant interactions?
The baby would attach to the caregiver who gratifies their needs.
