1

A

Learning a new behaviour via the process of association, linking two stimuli together to produce a learned response.

Q

Before Conditioning

A

UCS produces an UCR. NS is also present, but doesn’t yet produce a response.

Q

During Conditioning

A

NS is paired with the UCS. The UCR still occurs in response to thr UCS.

Q

After Conditioning

A

The NS is now the CS as it has been associated with the UCS to create a CR - the same response as before, but has now been learned.

Q

How is food helpful for babies to attach?

A

Hunger is a biological, innate motivator, and our primary drive.

12
Q

What’s our secondary drive?

A

Attachment, as we associate the primary drive of hunger to our caregivers.

Q

How can operant conditioning be applied to mother-infant interactions?

A

16
Q

Give an example of positive reinforcement in babies.

A

When a baby cries and a mother rewards this with comfort, the baby is more likely to repeat this behaviour.

17
Q

Give an example of negative reinforcement in babies.

A

When a baby cries because they’re scared of the dog and its caregiver removes the dog from the room, the baby is more likely to repeat the behaviour.

18
Q

Strengths of Learning Theory

A
  • Useful, as some elements of conditioning involve some elements of attachment.
  • Scientific and testable, using controlled lab experiments.
19
Q

Limitations of Learning Theory

A
  • Receives little support from animal studies - contradictory evidence.
  • Opposing theories such as social learning theory may provide better explanations for attachment.
  • Lack of support from human studies.
