Learning Strategies Flashcards
Retrieval or Recall Definition
Active process consisting of bringing info to mind and examining what we know, testing knowledge
Rote Learning Definition
Memorization based on repetition
Spaced Learning Definition
Spreading out the learning of concepts over time, rather than cramming
Pros of Rote Learning
- More efficient
- Leads to better short term performance
- Increases student confidence and motivation
Pros of Retrieval
- More effective over longer times
- Retrieving material is more efficient
- Practices the paths to relevant memories
Forgetting curve Definition
As time passes, we forget things. If we don’t return to what we learn, we typically don’t retain it as well.
Effect of spaced learning over forgetting curve
Over time and repetition, the forgetting curve flattens out
–> Each time you review or revisit concepts, the neurons reactivate and consolidate the info
Why is paying attention important?
- Engages the encoding of new info to memory
- through stuff like personal relevance, emotional value, context etc
- However depends on good integration
Integration Definition
Creating meaningful context and making connections to prior knowledge. Incorporating new info to what we already know
–> creativity is important here!
Meaning making Definition
Building a network of interconnected concepts
- alternative retrieval patterns
- secures the learning as its encoded into various spaces
