learning practical Flashcards
what is the aim of our learning practical?
to investigate differences in mobile phone use between male and female students at CoP
what is the alternate hypothesis in our learning practical?
One tailed - significantly more males than females will be observed using their phone (taking photos, texting, calling, social media) in the canteen/library between 2 and 3 pm
Two tailed = there will be a significant difference in mobile phone usage (taking photos, calls, texting or being on social media) between male and female students from 2pm to 3pm at PC
what is the null hypothesis in our learning practical?
there will be no significant difference difference in mobile phone usage (taking photos, calls, texting or being on social media) between male and female students
describe the procedure of our learning practical
- 5 students (observers) sat in the college canteen between 2-3pm
- three students observed males, the other two females
- notes were made on paper to remain as covert as possible
- behaviours were tallied on a checklist using veent sampling (for example tectng, calling, social media or taking a photo)
- the observers sat in the college canteen tables
- in total 39 students were observed, 20 females and 19 males
state the sampling method used in your learning practical investigation (1)
Event Sampling: every occurrence of behaviour, as specified on a predetermined checklist, is observed and recorded within a specified period of time.
Explain one strength and one weakness of the use of the observational method used in your learning practical investigation (4)
Describe the results of the statistical test you carried out for your learning practical investigation (2)
The calculated value is 0.3128 which is lower than the critical value of 6.25 (one tailed) and 7.82 (two tailed).
Therefore the results are not significant at p< 0.05 so the null is accepted, which states that ‘There will be no significant difference in mobile use (texting, calling, social media) between males and females in the canteen/library between 2 and 3 pm and the alternate hypothesis is rejected.
give two conclusions from your learning practical
- students used their phone for social media the most
- there is no significant difference between M+F students’ mobile phone use
Explain why you used a chi-squared test on your data (2)
learning practical
- The hypothesis predicted a significant test of difference (comparing how many male and female students used their phone)
- Nominal data (categories/ frequency eg. how many male and female students)
- Independent groups (pps only took part in one group - can only count as a male or female student, not both)
observed and critical value of our learning practical
observed - 0.3128
critical - 7.28 (two-tailed)
what is the conclusion of our chi-squared for the learning practical
the observed value is 0.3128 which is lower than the critical value of 7.82
therefore the reults are not significant at p< 0.05 so the null hypothesis is accepted which states that …..
what are the strengths of our learning practical?
what are the weaknesses of our learning practical
what improvement could we make to our learning practical?
