learning plateaus Flashcards
what is a learning plateau?
a period in performance where there are no signs of improvement - the performer makes no changes
problem 1 - lack of motivation:
the lack of incentives or extrinsic rewards may cause performer to lose drive & energy for skill
problem 2 - boredom:
the repetitive nature of a closed skill may cause boredom
problem 3 - coaching:
the coach may issue incorrect instructions or use incorrect practice methods so that the skill is not done correctly
problem 4 - limit of ability:
the performer may not improve simply because they have reached the full extent of their ability - they can’t improve as there is no underlying skill
problem 5 - targets set too low:
the task may not allow performer to use their full range of skills - the limit of the task does not allow them to improve
problem 6 - fatigue:
continuous actions over an extended period of time would inevitably result in tiredness - especially if the same muscles are being used repeatedly
solution 1 - change goals & targets:
the task could be extended so that a new challenge is given to test the performer or goals could be set to see if task extensions are met
solution 2 - the coach:
the player could find a new coach to raise performance levels
solution 3 - fatigue:
a rest could be taken to avoid fatigue
solution 4 - boredom:
more variety can be added to training to avoid boredom
solution 5 - explanations:
explain the concept of the learning plateau to the performer so they don’t take personal responsibility
solution 6 - feedback
provide the player with feedback to help improve performance and motivation
