learning approaches: social learning theory Flashcards
what is social learning theory
behaviour is learned from experience
(bandura - doesn’t need to be direct)
mind, behaviour, environment all play a role in learning behaviour
define modelling
learning through the observation of role models which may lead to imitation
define role model
people who may have qualities we would like to have
define identification
a desire to be associated with a particular person or group because they posse desirable characteristics
define imitation
copying the behaviour of others
what is modelling from an observer’s perspective
imitating the behaviour of a role model
what is modelling from an role model perspective
precise demonstrations of a specific behaviour that may then imitated by an observer
define direct reinforcement
the human/animal receives the reward themselves
define vicarious reinforcement (this is a key factor in imitation)
reinforcement which is not directly experienced but occurs through observing someone else being reinforced for a behaviour
define mediational processes
these are cognitive factors involved in learning. These mental factors mediate the learning process to determine whether a new response is required
list the 4 mediational processes
- attention
- retention
- motor reproduction
- motivation
define attention (which is one of the 4 mediational processes)
individual notices something in their environment
define retention (which is one of the 4 mediational processes)
individual remembers what they have observed
define motor reproduction (which is one of the 4 mediational processes)
individual replicates the behaviour shown by the model
define motivation (which is one of the 4 mediational processes)
individual has the will to perform the behaviour often determined by whether the behaviour was rewarded or punished
