MAIN ASSUMPTIONS

A

We all begin life as a blank slate. Experiences and interactions with the environment shape our behaviour and these changes are directly observable.

We learn through the processes of operant conditioning, classical conditioning and social learning.

This can be understood using the stimulus–response model.

Learning = relatively permanent change in behavior that results from experience

Classical conditioning = learning procedure in which associations are made between a neutral stimulus and a natural stimulus- NS+Unconditioned Stimulus paired- Conditioned Stimulus (CS) Operant Conditioning = learning in which an action is punished or reinforced, resulting in increasing or decreasing occurrence

Positive reinforcement: adding reward to elict desired behaviour

Negative reinforcement- removing unpleasant consequence for desired behaviour (seat belt sound).

Punishment- unpleasant consequence for undesired behavior.

Primary reinforcer- satisfies biological need (food) Secondary- acquires value by pairing with primary reinforcer (whistle, then food).
