Learning and memory Flashcards
What is the difference between declarative and non-declarative memory?
Declarative = knowing facts Non-declarative = knowing how
What is pavlovian memory?
Conditioned memory
e.g. Repeatedly ring a bell and feed and eventually do salivates when you ring a bell.
What is aplysia memory?
Habitualization - e.g. tap him on the tail and he withdraws it… keep tapping him and he eventually stops withdrawing
Why are memories filtered?
The brain needs to be able to recall certain things of importance
What is retrograde amnesia?
Following ECT or trauma. Loose memory of things that happened recently, but not ancient memories and you still pick up new memories.
What is anterograde amnesia?
You cannot lay down new memories, but can remember everything from the past
What is the first stage of memory processing?
Long term potentiation
What leads to growth of new synaptic connections?
Prolonged activation
What are the 3 stages of memory storing?
1 - local association cortex
- consolidated in the hippocampus
- temporal lobe for life
What type of reinforcement is involved in dog training? how does it work?
Positive
- a cue can lead to a response
- more likely to occur if accompanied by a primary and maybe even a secondary reinforcer
- these can be taken away over time as the cue leads straight to a response
