What are stock control systems needed for?
To keep track of how much stock an organisation has at any one time, how fast each item is moving and when it has to be reordered.
What will a good stock control system ensure?
- that a company has the right amount of stock at the right time
- record for each item how many were used or sold in a day, week, month etc, quantity details
What is data logging?
The process of collecting and storing data over a period of time in different systems or environments.
What are some methods by which data can be collected?
- stock control system

What is an example of data logging?
recording the temperature changes over the course of an hour in a centrally heated room using a timer, thermometer, pen and paper
What is primary data?
Data which is collected for a specific purpose.
What is qualitative data?
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers.
What are some examples of qualitative data?
- focus groups
- interviews
- case studies
What is quantitive data?
data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted, measured, or given a numerical value.
What are some examples of quantitative data?
- height
- temperature
- sales figure
- test scores
What is secondary data?
Quantitive data which has already been collected by someone other than the user.
What are some examples of secondary data?
- newspapers
- reviews
- articles
- surveys carried out for other investigations
What are the advantages and disadvantages of secondary data?
+ time-saving
+ low cost or even free
+ allows you to generate new insights from previous analysis
- you are not the owner of the data so anyone can access it
- data may be out of date
- can be bias in favour of the person who gathered it
