Define self concept
Combination of self esteem and self image, a collection of belief’s about ourselves
Define self image
How an individual sees themselves and how they think they are seen by others
Define self esteem
How an individual feels about themselves
Factors which affect self esteem and image
- Supportive family more likely to have better self esteem and image
- Culture and religion
- Sexual orientation
Define attachment
The bond between children and their primary caregiver (usually parent)
Bowlby’s theory of attachment
- The idea that children are biologically pre- programmed to form attachments and infancy is the key time for this
- Attachment to primary caregiver acts as a model for future attachments
- Disruption to attachment at infancy can have negative effect on development
Causes of disruption to attachment
Post natal depression
Disability
Premature birth
Effects of disruption to attachment
- Anxiety
- Difficulty forming relationships
- Struggles to form attachment with own child
Secure attachment (Ainsworth strange situation)
Child upset when separated from main carer but content with stranger when main carer present
Insecure/ avoidant attachment
Main carer is not always there for child
Child not affected by absence of main carer and explores environment
Happy to go to stranger
Insecure/ resistant
Main carer inconsistent of meeting child’s needs
Child upset when main carer leaves but doesn’t welcome them when they return
Shows anxiety and insecurity
