What is the definition of Growth?
A measurable increase in size. E.g. Height and weight.
What is the definition of Development?
An increase of abilities and skills developed through out life.
What is a Gross Motor skill?
The use of the large muscles. E.g. Running
What is a Fine Motor skill?
The use of the smaller muscles. E.g. Turning a page of a book
What is a Milestone?
The ability achieved by a certain age in life. E.g. Walking on their own at infancy
Name two primary sexual characteristics of a female.
- The Menstruation cycle starts,
- Uterus and vagina grow,
- An egg is realised each month,
What is a primary sexual characteristic?
A processes related to the sex organs which are present at birth and mature when sex hormones are released during puberty.
Name two primary sexual characteristics of a male.
- Penis enlarge,
- Testes start producing sperm,
- Regular erections,
What is a secondary sexual characteristic?
Sexual characteristics develop during puberty.
Name two secondary sexual characteristics of a female.
- Breasts grow and develop,
- Pubic hair grows,
- Hips widen
Name two secondary sexual characteristics of a male.
- Larynx (Voice box) deepens,
- Pubic hair and facial hair grows,
- Chest and shoulders become broader (muscles develop).
When is the age that individuals reach physical maturity?
25 years old.
What are the hormones occurred in lactation?
Prolactin, Oestrogen, Human placental lactogen and progesterone
What is the process of lactation?
Progesterone stops the the body from making loads of milk before the baby is born.
When the placenta is delivered, the progesterone levels drops. Then prolactin levels rise to allow the breasts to lactate. This hormone also drives a mothering instinctive and works along side oxytocin (the love hormone).
What is perimenopause?
The process when the oestrogen levels drop. This decrease delays the egg from being released each month.
What is menopause?
When the egg stops being released each month and reproductive hormone levels decrease.
What are the physical effects of perimenopause?
- Hot flushes (Caused by low levels of norepinephrine),
- Night sweats,
- Viginal dryness,
- Loss of libido,
- Urinary leaking,
What are the emotional effects of perimenopause?
- Mood swings,
- Tiredness and fatigue
What is the ‘Middle age spread’?
Fat accumulates around the age of 40+ due to a lack of compensation for exercise with eating.
