Leaf structure Flashcards
Cuticle
Protects the leaf and prevents water loss (evaporation)
Epidermis
Protective outer layer on the top and bottom of the leaf
Palisade mesophyll Cell
Located under the upper epidermis, contains most of the cells chlorophyll
Xylem
Vascular tissue in plants that transports water+dissolve tissue nutrients from the root up
Pholem
Vascular tissue in plants that conducts sugar and other things from the leaves down
Spongy mesophyll cell
Layer below the palisade mesophyll, contains some chloroplast’s. Communicates with guard cell causing them to open or close
Guard cell
Pairs of epidermal cells that control the gases and vapors coming out of the cell
Stoma
A pore in the plants leaves where vapor and gas leaves the plant
