Cells/Organelles Flashcards
Cell membrane
The boundary that surrounds a cell and controls which substances can enter or leave the cell
Cell wall (non-living)
A stiff structure that surrounds, protects the cell and supports it; found in plants, fungus, and some bacteria cells
Chloroplast (photosynthesis)
An organelle in a plant that turns energy from the sun into chemical energy for the plant to use
Chromatin
Same as chromosome but unwound (DNA and protien)
Chromosome
A tightly wound bundle of DNA and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells (condensed chromatin)
Cytoplasm
Constantly moving liquid in the inside of a living cell (clear jelly-like fluid)
Endoplasma Reticulum (ER)
Transports proteins throughout the cell
Golgi body
A stack of membrane bound vessels. Receives proteins and other materials from the ER, packages them and distributes them to the other parts of the cell.
Lysosome
Contains enzymes that are necessary for intracelular digestion, breaks down old cell parts
Mitochondria
Converts food energy into something the cell can use (powerhouse of the cell)
Nuclear membrane
Double layer that protects the nucleus, separates it from the cytoplasm
Nucleus
An organelle that holds the cells DNA (command center)
Nucleolus
In the nucleus - produces ribosomes, which move out of the nucleus and into the (rough) endoplasmas reticulum
Centriole
Ring of nine fuse microtubules, part of the cytoskeleton (maintain structure within the cell)
Ribosomes
Manufactures proteins
