What is an autocratic leader?
An autocratic leader is someone who gives instructions and allocates tasks.
Advantages
Good if major quick decision are needed.
Uniform message.
Good if there are a large number if unskilled worker.
Disadvantages
Harsh critics
Staff do not act on initiative
High staff turnover as staff may be unhappy.
What is a paternalistic leader?
Take views of the workforce into account. Consults employees.
Advantages
Treats staff like family
Offers benefits
Loyal staff/ less staff turnover
Disadvantages
Does not encourage creativity
Not making the most of human resources.
What is a democratic leader?
May allow employees to vote.
Will delegate decisions/
Listens to employees views.
Advantages
Develops managerial skills in junior employees.
High morale, employees offer more constructive ideas.
Disadvantages
Can result in slower decision making. Allow manager to shirk (avoid) responsibility.
Less consistent decisions.
What is a Participative leader?
Some employees are fully involved in decision making. Most useful when business needs to take complex decisions requiring a range of specialist skills.
Advantages
Uses talents and creativity of workers to full extent. ( New ideas)
Increase skills and confidence of junior managers.
Disadvantages
Slower decisions
Less consistency
What is a Laissez-faire leader?
Subordinates make most decisions, with no reference to management.
Advantages
Useful for well qualified or highly motivated teams or when all have a common objective.
Disadvantages
Lack coordination/ sense of direction
Neglect planning.
