process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organisation

what are the key components in understanding what leadership is
A
- influence
- responsibility
- leaders take the responsibility to set, know and understand the vision and direction of the team
- have good judgement of situations and make good ethical decisions and act correctly
- care for their team - relationships
- leaders do not operate alone
- members must be happy, willing, respectfully following

- need to nurture r/s by (i) knowing your people (strengths and capabilities) (ii) caring (nurturing and supporting) (iii) empowering (develop potential)

what are the key leadership skills
A
- building r/s, building trust
- the lack of trust is the root of success or failure in r/s
- trust is the confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability and justice of another person
- cannot be bought or commanded, inherited or enforced and to maintain trust, leaders must continually earn it
- trust is fragile and grows in increments, is a two-way r/s and entails risk, trust is rational and emotional - effective communication (clarity, asking and listening, empathy)
- clarity is ensuring what you are saying is communicated clearly with no room for misunderstanding by (i) using simple language (ii) focus on core points of the message (iii) prevent confusion and ambiguity
- active listening is when you not only hear what the person says but also attune to their thoughts and feelings; there are seven types of listeners with engagers being at the highest level as they are the consciously aware listeners by listening with their eyes, ears, heart and try to put themselves in the speakers’ shoes
- asking questions that are thought-provoking, reflecting, insightful, clarifying, empowering, effective
- empathetic listening is the practice of being attentive and responsive to other’s input and making an emotional connection with the other person by (i) validating or showing acceptance although not necessarily in agreement (ii) listening to give support and encouragement rather than advice and criticism (iii) benefits include building trusting and positive r/s, helping oneself to act kindly and compassionately, increases productivity and problem solving - reflection and continuous learning (character growth and improvement)
