What is the difference between power and leadership
power: relies on goal compliance, contains a multidirectional focus, has no compatibility with others
leaderships: influences others to achieve a goal and naturally assumes goal congruence between follower and leaders
leaders have a downward influence with their followers as well
what is the definition of leadership
it is the ability to influence a group to achieve a vision or goal
what are some foundational leadership theories and what are some contemporary leadership theories
foundational: trait theory, behaviour, situational leadership theory
contemporary leadership theory: transformational, charismatic, authentic and servant leadership
what is the trait theory of leadership
it believes that leadership traits are inherited or born with
personality traits (such as extraversion, openness to experience) are potential predictors of personality
what is behavioural theory
leadership can be trained and copied but they are categorised into two main types
- task orientated
which emphasizes on procedures and control
- people orientated
which emphasizes on human relation
what is contingency/ situational leadership theory
it focuses on teams and subordinates where leaders rely on followers readiness and adaptation of style to their followers needs
what are the four aspects of situational leadership
- telling
specific instruction and supervised performance
(low competence, high commitment) - selling
explains decision and provide opportunity for clarification
(low to some competence, low commitment) - participation
sharing ideas and facilitating decision making
(moderate to increase competence, variable commitment) - delegation
turn over responsibility for decision and implementation
(increased commitment and increase competence)
what is transformation leadership (in the four Is)
Inspirational motivation - inspire to focus on team goals/ shared values/ sense of purpose
more effective -> for smaller organisation
Intellectual stimulation - enabling idea development by creating psychological safety, enhancing individuals ability and self efficacy
more effective -> allows for greater locus of control, greater autonomy and increased motivation but this is due to poor job strength
Idealised future - leader acting as a role model, boosting trust in a leader
more effective -> stressful situation
individual consideration - leaders acting as a coach or monitor
this fulfils follower autonomy, competency and their related need
more effective -> when employees have greater autonomy and increase self efficacy

it focuses on serving others that lies beyond self interest, prioritising the growth of others.
