Leadership for Worship (chapter 1) Flashcards
Knowing that this is what God has called me to do has kept me going:
- When the church wasn’t able to afford to pay me for my ministry.
- When the best singers called to say they weren’t going to make it to rehearsal because…they had other plans.
- When they didn’t even bother to call.
Knowing that I’m in the field of ministry that God has called me to has kept me:
- From hopping the fence when the grass on the other side looked greener.
- When those inevitable personality conflicts made me want to run to some other place of ministry or get out of ministry all together.
Being called of God is a ______ thing, differing from _______ to individual.
personal, individual
Examine your ____ to ministry. It’s not your grandfather’s call, or your classmates’ call—it’s ____!
call, yours
The music ______, worship ______, worship & arts ____ , etc… is rarely the senior pastor of a congregation.
minister, leader, pastor
According to Calvin Johansson, “This person must become a _____ to the choir, the ______ team, and in some ways to the congregation.
pastor, worship
In other words, the first concern must not be ______ or learning new worship material or even the quality of music. Instead priority #1 must be the ______ in the music/worship program.
programs, people
If you consider yourself a musician but not a “_____ _____ ,” music/worship ministry is going to be difficult for you.
people person
You’ll find that most of the challenges that you will face as a music minister will not test your musical expertise or technical skill, but rather your ability to ______ and _____ to ordinary (and sometimes ornery) human beings.
motivate, relate
Your effectiveness will come from about 20% _____ and _______ and about 80% ____ in dealing with people. I’ve come to believe that may be an understatement!
ability, education, skill
The worship leader/minister of people—or any minister—must bring to his calling a sense of ______.
humility
If you take a church thinking “I’m going to educate these hicks and expose them to some REAL music,” you are the one who is going to get _____ and ______. Educated by being humbled—either by the congregation or by the Lord–and exposed as someone who cares more about showing off your musical expertise than serving your fellow travelers.
educated, exposed
The pastoral duty of the musicians/worship leader/choir director/music minister, etc. is:
- to CARE
- to be CONCERNED
- to SHOW REGARD FOR—in a word
- to LOVE
One of the biggest challenges to any minister is that of juggling ______.
priorities
The lines between _____ God, ______ the family He gave me, and _____ His call to ministry often blur. All too frequently they overlap.
serving, cherishing, fulfilling
Questions to ask when priorities collide:
- Which program/obligation/event has eternal value?
- Ten years from now, who will care if I was there? When ministry and family events conflict, who is more likely to remember your absence years later, your church or your family?
- What does a trusted advisor or impartial 3rd party say?
- Am I doing this for the Lord or myself?
- What are my motives for choosing one opportunity over the other?
Dealing with people is ________.
exhausting
If you refuse to leave because there are still things left to do, you’ll _____ take one minute off.
never
It takes ______ and _______ to take regular time off.
discipline, organization
The key is _______.
balance
Questions to ask when you want to leave:
- Am I still called to this place of ministry?
- If not, and I called somewhere else?
- Am I running from a problem here?
- If yes, have I done everything I can, with God’s help, to resolve the problem?
- Would my leaving be good for the congregation I presently serve?
- Would my leaving be good for my family?
- Have I fasted and prayed for God’s direction rather than reacting to my feelings?
