What is transactional leadership?

A
  • First described by sociologist Max Weber (1900).
  • Developed by Bernard M. Bass in 1980s.
  • Workers motivated by rewards and punishments.
  • Obeying instructions/commands of leader is primary goal
  • Subordinates carefully monitored to ensure that expectations are met.
  • Often used in business; when employees are successful, they are rewarded; when they fail, they are reprimanded or punished.
