Leadership and Power Flashcards
What are the types of power
Expert (you want someone’s skills and expertise), referent (being liked, you want them to like you), information (you want someone’s data and information), coercive, reward, and legitimate (positional power, this person does not have power without their position)

Referent and expert power are the longest lasting types of power
Which types of power are the fastest acting
coercive and reward power are the fastest acting
Which types of power are the most and least acceptable and why
Referent, informational, and expert power are the most accepted because you go to the other person because of this power, you want something from them.
Coercive, reward, and legitimate power are the least accepted because the person with this power goes to you.
What are the good, bad, and ugly aspects of power
Good aspects: empower others, drive positive change, mentorship and growth, and order and stability
Bad aspects: abuse of authority, favoritism and unfair rewards, and short-term focus
Ugly: corruption and exploitation, intimidation and fear-based culture, and manipulation and deception
What is leadership and what are the types of leadership theories
Leadership is the ability to influence a group towards the achievement of a vision or set of goals, the source of influence may be formal (their position in an organization) or not. Main theories are trait theories, behavioral theories, and contingency theories
What are trait theories of leadership
These theories claim that leaders are born and then we should select the right people to be leaders. We associate certain traits with leadership such as intelligence, energy, drive, and self-confidence.
What are the limitations of the trait approach
Causality (traits themselves don’t make someone a leader, it could be the other way around, or something else that gives rise to both). This approach leads to a biased decision making process (picking leaders based on traits), and there is a failure to consider the situational impacts
What are the behavioural theories of leadership and the two key dimensions of leader behavior
This approach claims that leaders are made and we should train people to be leaders by training them in these specific behaviors. Two key dimensions are initiating structure (the degree to which a leader concentrates on group goal attainment) and consideration (the degree to which a leader is approachable and shows personal concern and respect for their employees)
What are the contingency theories of leadership
These theories take both the leader themselves and the situation into account. It also takes the type of followers into account and says that different types of leadership are needed for different types of followers
What are the different types of followers and what leadership style should be used for each
Able and willing - delegating
Able and unwilling/apprehensive - participating
Unable and willing - selling
Unable and unwilling/insecure - telling
What are the two main leadership styles
Transactional leaders: guide and motivate their followers in the direction of established goals by clarifying role and task requirements, they focus mainly on the task at hand
Transformational leaders: try to inspire followers to go beyond self interest for the good of the organization, they can have a profound effect on their followers
These styles are not opposing, but complementary approaches to leadership
What are the other leadership styles discussed in class
Authentic leadership: people who know who they are, know what they believe in and value and act on these beliefs
Ethical leadership: can be a moral person by upholding moral values or be a moral manager - role model, and reward and punish to enhance moral behavior
Servant leadership: focus on needs of employees, empower others, foster leadership in employees, and serve with humility
Charismatic leadership: an enthusiastic and self-confident leader whose personality and actions influences people to behave in certain ways
