Definition of Leadership
Leadership refers to the use of personal traits and personal power to constructively and ethically influence and persuade
The Great Man Theory
Asserts that some people are born to be leaders and others are born to be followers
Behavioral Theories
Focus is on human relations. Leaders are made through education, training, and life experience. Importance is placed on what the leader does, how relations are formed and treated. Assume that effective leaders aquire a pattern of learned behaviors “styles”
Autocratic Leadership Style
Assumes that individuals are motivated by external forces such as power, authority, and need for approval
Democratic Leadership Style
Assumes that individuals are motivated by internal drives and impulses and want to participate in decisions and want to get tasks done
Laissez-Faire Style
Assumes that individuals are motivated by internal drives and impulses and they need to be left alone to make decisions about how to complete work.

Situational-Contingency Leadership
The leader uses a combination of styles based on current circumstances and events
Transactional Leadership
Is aimed at maintaining equilibrium, or the status quo, by performing work according to policy and procedures, maximizing self-interests and personal rewards. This leader is concerned with day-to-day operations. The focus is on tasks and getting the work done.
Transformative Leadership
Has a vision and is able to empower others with this vision. The focus is on vision and empowerment
