What does leadership involve?
Exerting influence over others to achieve the group’s aims and to enable others to contribute towards the effectiveness of the work unit/organisation
Trait theories of leadership?
Good person theory - relies on trait meta-analysis
Transformational leaders - leaders who base their style mostly on charisma and works to redirect their followers thinking. They respond well to and encourage change
Contingency theory of leadership?
Leadership quality depends on interaction between situation and leadership style. There are task-oriented and relationship-oriented styles. Leader-member relations, task structure and position power are important situational factors
Group polarisation?
“Risky shift” - tendency for group discussions to produce more extreme decisions than average of pre-discussion opinion. This can be explained by persuasive arguments, social comparison and social identity. Groupthink involves the desire to come to an agreement more than using rational decision-making processes
