What are the two most favoured leadership styles?
- Autocratic: Leadership depends on power and authority that comes with their position
- Democratic: Leader depends on personal power, participative decision making and problem solving
What is an autocratic leadership style?
The autocratic style is used when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers.
Although this may seem to be a very non-inclusive style of leadership, if people do not have the required skills or experience, they will need clear and direct instructions to allow them to successfully complete a task.
Conversely, using this style of leadership with people who have experience and skills will not work and may serve to alienate them from you as a leader.
What is the democratic leadership style?
This style involves the leader including one or more employees in the decision making process (determining what to do and how to do it).
However, the leader maintains the final decision making authority. Using this style is not a sign of weakness; rather it is a sign of strength that your employees will respect.
This is normally used when you have part of the information, and your employees have other parts. Note that a leader is not expected to know everything — this is why you employ knowledgeable and skilful employees. Using this style is of mutual benefit — it allows them to become part of the team and allows you to make better decisions.
However, this style alone, does not allow for employees who do not yet have the necessary skill or experience to accomplish a task.
What is a situational leader?
Situational leaders are able to adapt their leadership style to fit their followers and the situations in which they are working. This says, for example, that the same manager may use very different actions in leading each member of their team.
Managers using situational leadership will make conscious choices between their use of directive behaviour (autocratic) and supportive behaviour (democratic).
In directive behaviour, they are relying on providing structure, control and close supervision for the people with whom they are working. In supportive behaviour, they are relying on praise, two-way communication, and facilitating the work of their employees and co-workers.

A failure across the team to establish standards of performance and behaviour
