they inspire and motivate people to meet their objectives
what do managers do?
- set objectives
- analyse things such as business performance and factors to help achieve objectives
- leading by communicate and motivate
- make decisions such as allocating of resources and day to day running of business
- reviewing peoples performance and take actions if necessary
what is an autocratic leadership style?
- leader makes decision without consultation
- sustainable for unskilled/ demotivated employees
- good for times of crises when quick decisions are needed
- minimum delegation
what is a democratic leadership style?
- leader consults with team but makes final decision
- delegates some authority and encourages participation
- subordinates have more power over their working lives than autocratic
- sustainable for skilled and self motivated workers
what is laissez-faire (to leave alone) leadership style?
- allows team to make the decisions
- sustainable for high skilled, creative, self motivated workers
- workforce understands and agrees with organisations objectives
what is a paternalistic leadership style?
leader acts in a “fatherly” way towards workforce by making decisions based on the needs of the workforce AS WELL AS the business
trait theory (theory of management)
some people have argued that leaders/ managers should have certain traits and characteristics that differentiate them from others
behavioural theory (theories of management)
this theory focuses on how the individual leader behaves and looks at the extent to which they have concern for people compared to their concern for production
