The pronoun EN
Used to replace an inanimate noun that is preceded by a preposition and an article, an expression of quantity.
E.g du, de la, de l’, des, beaucoup de, une douzaine de
Where is EN placed in the sentence?
It is placed before the verb.
Tu parles de la fin du film?
Tu en parles.
What happens to the expression of quantity or the number?
It remains and is placed at the end of the phrase. Il y a beaucoup d'enfants. Il y en a beaucoup. J'ai une douzaine d'oranges. J'en ai une douzaine.
What happens in a negative sentence?
The “ne/n’” comes before the en and the pas goes after the verb.
Je n’en achète pas.
What happens if “y” is also in the sentence?
The Y comes before the EN.
Il y en a beaucoup.
If the sentence is negative the structure is:
Il n’y en a pas beaucoup.
What happens to en in a sentence with a modal verb?
And in the negative?
The EN comes before the infinitive.
Je veux EN acheter.
The ne/pas surrounds the modal verb, EN is not separated from the infinitif.
Je ne veux pas EN acheter.
