le chateliers principle Flashcards

1
Q

what is le chateliers principle

A

change the conditions of a reversible reaction. so the position of equilibrium will shift to try and counteract the change

Q

if we increase the temperature of a reversible reaction what happens

A

the direction of the exothermic reaction is where the equilibrium will follow. e.g. the exothermic reaction is on the forward arrow so if we increase temp then equilibrium will move to the right so more products and fewer reactants.

Q

what would happen if we decreased the temperature of a reaction

A

for example if the bottom arrow was endo thermic then the equilibrium will follow that direction of the arrow so there would be more reactants than products

Q

what would happen if we increased the pressure of a reaction

A

the equilibrium will move to whatever side will lower the pressure back down
so if there was more molecules on the left side of the reaction the equilibrium will shift to the right

Q

what would happen if we decrease the pressure of a reaction

A

the equilibrium will then move to the side with more molecules

Q

what would happen if there was more concentration on one side of the equation

A

the equilibrium will shift to the opposite side and increase the other side to balance both sides of the equation
