factors affecting the rate of reaction Flashcards
what are the 4 factors that affect the rate of reacton
temperature
concentration/pressure
surface area
the abscense or prescence of a catalyst
theory behind reactions
collision theory- for particles to react they have to collide with eachother with sufficient energy
what does the rate depend on
amount of energy the particles have
more energy they can transfer during the collision
frequency of collisions
how often the particles collide
not all collisions are successful
these two increase rate of reaction
if we increase temperature of a reaction what happens
particles will gain more energy so they will move faster and then collide more frequently
they will also collide with more energy and more likely to exceed activation energy
so overall they are more likely to have a higher rate of successful collisions
equalling higher rate of reacton
if we increase concentration or pressure in a reaction what happens
more particles per unit of volume
collisions are more frequent so it increases the rate of reaction
how does a higher surface area increase the rate of reaction
higher surface area : volume ratio increases frequency of collisions
what is a catalyst
substance that speed up a reaction without being used up in the reaction
how does a catalyst speed up a reaction
catalyst lowers the minimum amount of activation energy so this means there will be a higher proportion of successful collisions
do transisition metals make good catalysts
yes
