le Chatelier's principle Flashcards
state Le Chatelier’s principle.
when an external change is applied to a system at equilibrium, the equilibrium moves in the direction that reduces the effects of that change
A + B –><— C+D
the rate of the forward reaction is greater. what will happen to the equilibrium ?
if the forward reaction is favoured - more products are made so conc of products increases
in order
What is the equilibrium constant ?
A numerical value that tells you the proportion of the products concentration compared to the reactants concentration and gives you an indication of the equilibriums position
What is a high value of Kc ?
A value that is bigger than 1
What does it mean if you have a high value for Kc ?
It means that the products are predominate
And equilibrium lies to the right
What does a Kc value of 1 mean ?
It suggests that the equilibrium is in a 50 50 proportion / relationship
What does a Kc value that is less than 1 suggest ?
It suggests that the reactants are predominate
and equilibrium lies to the left
Under what condition does Kc vary ?
Kc varies with temperature
State the Kc expression ?
aA + bB -> <- cC + dD
